Jamaica is undergoing a significant transformation with a series of major infrastructure and urban development projects shaping its future. These initiatives, fueled by the 2026/2027 budget and efforts to recover from recent hurricanes, are set to improve transportation, healthcare, and urban living standards across the island. Expanding and Improving Road Infrastructure

Road infrastructure is a cornerstone of Jamaica’s development strategy. The government has prioritized several large-scale projects to enhance connectivity, reduce travel times, and support economic activity.

  • Port Antonio Bypass

This 18-kilometre bypass is a key part of the Port Antonio Master Plan. With a budget of US$81 million, the project aims to ease traffic congestion and improve access to this important northeastern town. Construction has already begun, signaling a commitment to modernizing transport routes in the region.

  • Southern Coastal Highway Improvement Project (SCHIP)

Allocated $2.5 billion for the 2025/26 fiscal year, SCHIP targets the southern coastal corridor. The project is expected to be completed by March 2027 and will enhance road safety and efficiency along this vital stretch, supporting tourism and local communities.

  • SPARK Programme

The Shared Prosperity through Accelerated Improvement to our Road Network (SPARK) programme will start work on 121 additional roads by March 2026. This initiative focuses on upgrading smaller but essential roads, improving access to rural areas and boosting local economies.

  • One Road Authority

To ensure consistent road standards and performance, the government has approved a policy framework to establish a single executive agency. This authority will oversee road regulation and project implementation, streamlining processes and improving accountability.

Revitalizing Healthcare Facilities

Healthcare infrastructure is receiving significant investment to enhance service delivery and capacity.

  • Cornwall Regional Hospital

With $5 billion allocated, Phase III of the hospital’s redevelopment is underway. This phase will expand facilities and modernize equipment, with completion expected in the new fiscal year. The upgrade will improve healthcare access for residents in western Jamaica.

  • Western Children’s Hospital

The new 220-bed facility is nearing completion, with over 80% of structural work, roofing, and systems testing done. A budget of $700 million supports this project, which will provide specialized pediatric care and reduce pressure on existing hospitals.

  • University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI)

Construction has started on a new medical tower at UHWI. This addition will increase capacity and introduce advanced medical technologies, reinforcing the hospital’s role as a leading healthcare provider in the Caribbean.

Urban Development and Public Facilities

Urban centers and public facilities are also seeing major investments to improve living conditions and community services.

  • Morant Bay Urban Centre

Scheduled for completion by December 2024, this project aims to revitalize the town of Morant Bay in St. Thomas. It will provide modern commercial and public spaces, boosting local business and community engagement.

  • Boundbrook Urban Centre

Groundbreaking has taken place for this $4.2 billion development in Portland. The centre will offer a mix of retail, office, and recreational spaces, creating a vibrant hub that supports economic growth and tourism.

  • National Stadium Redevelopment

The National Stadium is undergoing redevelopment to upgrade facilities and seating capacity. This project will enhance the venue’s ability to host major sporting and cultural events, contributing to national pride and tourism.

The Impact on Jamaica’s Future

These infrastructure and urban development projects represent more than just construction efforts. They are investments in Jamaica’s future, designed to:

  • Improve transportation efficiency and safety

  • Expand access to quality healthcare

  • Foster economic growth through urban revitalization

  • Strengthen resilience against natural disasters

By focusing on these areas, Jamaica is positioning itself for sustainable growth and improved quality of life for its citizens.
